Why not just buy a box of crystals from Home Depot and the little plastic container that holds them? I use them in my basement and they work fine WITHOUT any electricity or re-chargable batteries. Also, a nit with the story, this device does NOT “save energy”, it uses energy. Maybe it saves energy compared to a box fan, but you can’t beat the no-fan crystals. I believe the brand I use is Damp-Rid.

I am looking for an alternative greener product for small spaces that cannot accomodate electric dehumidifiers. This Eva-dehumidifier looks like a good possibility, with little to no impact on the environment.
@Matt – I’ve been using a similar product to the poster above, called “Dri-Z-Air” (http://www.drizair.com/). I looked up the product safety sheet and “Dri-Z-Air” is composed mainly of Calcium Chloride, which the manufacturers say is ‘non toxic’ and at the same time that “This product is a “Hazardous Chemical” as defined by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29.
It also states that, ” Brief contact is essentially nonirritating to skin. Prolonged contact may cause skin irritation, even a burn. Not classified as corrosive to the skin according to DOT guidelines. May cause more severe response if skin is damp. May cause more severe response if skin is abraded (scratched or cut). May cause more severe response on covered skin (under clothing, gloves).”
The website & product Safety data sheet also states to pour the collected liquid down the drain, that it is not biodegradable, ‘can be corrosive to metals’, and supposedly ‘will not harm fish’.
That said I’m skeptical of how non-toxic this can be & about pouring this non-biodegradable chemical down the drain. The chemicals would likely will make it into the water & environment, and may cause some kind of negative impact and effect to both water sources, wildlife, humans and the environment.
